This protocol may include things like the start bit, number of data bits, parity and stop bit(s). For this application to work, the driver must transmit an idle (binary 1) after the driver is enabled, for some period of time before the start bit is transmitted. When an RS-485 driver gets its data directly from a UART (with no added inversion), you would expect the "A" and "B" wires to match the voltages in the RS-485 standard for the voltages on the wires, but they will not (unless the driver inverts its input). The first is that if the line is long enough, an AC "ohmmeter" connected to the input of the model will see the "resistance" of the wires as 120 Ω. Pull a cable between the two devices and see if they can talk to each other. If you are trying to get two ancient pieces of equipment (both of which use true RS-232 drivers and receivers) to work with a long cable, the capacitance limit in RS-232 may apply, but RS-232 does not take bit rate into account.

RS485 meets the requirements for a truly multi-point communications network, and the standard specifies up to 32 drivers and 32 receivers on a single (2-wire) bus. This is a example of point to point (one port communicates with one device). If the signal is unstable, consider using a bias resistor at a selected point in the line. In areas with significant signal interference, it may be necessary to implement a mechanism in the communication software for multiple queries to distinguish between signal interference and device disconnection. This means that in a master/slave configuration, a master can talk to multiple slaves, but only one slave can talk back to the master. For long connections, use terminating resistors at both the master and the farthest end of the line, commonly using 120Ω, though the actual value should be calculated based on cable specifications.

When using RS485 communication, try to use short cable lengths to minimize noise interference, and ground the shield of the isolation network together with the main communication line. It is generally recommended to use shielded 24awg twisted pair cables for daisy-chaining devices together, avoiding loop or star-shaped wiring configurations. The circuit illustrates the fundamental connection method for a two-wire wiring system. The two-wire half-duplex system permits bidirectional data transmission between two devices, RS485 standard but not concurrently. The signals appear differentially on these two wires. The receiver can monitor the wires and indicate a fault if a 0 is detected on the wires for an extended period of time. The bias and terminations resistors form a voltage divider and several process can be used to calculate the resistor values. Rbias- are 1440Ω and Rterm is 120Ω there will be 0.2V of bias across the termination resistor. There are numerous mentions of "empirically determined" in these standards.

There is a lot of folklore stating that RS-232 has a 50 or 100 foot limit. This serial port was no longer a "RS-232 compatible" serial port since the connector and signal levels no longer matched the RS-232 standard. It can’t be denied that the UART IBM selected for its implementation of the serial port is considered by many as the definition of RS-232, but these parts are not in the RS-232 standard. Evaluation versions are fully functional. Modern processors are fast enough that handshaking is rarely needed. The purpose of handshaking is for the receiver to tell the transmitting device to "shut up, I'm full of data and will lose anything more you send me". However, if you’re looking to experiment, the latter will provide you with more versatility. The RS-485 standard calls for a differential signaling scheme that will operate over a much longer line length than RS-232 can.
