WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades can give you an increase in certain stats. Each upgrade increases the level of the item by +3. Each upgrade also increases a random substat.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless the item upgrade is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like the eth Titan weapons). These types of gear get less value from upgrading due to the necessity to roll to get a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader enables players to upgrade their gear to a higher level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied on any type of weapon or armor. However, the item that is used to upgrade item will be consumed for the duration of time and can't be used again. Upgrades can be used to create the enchantments.

The upgrader is located in every major city, and can be visited at any time to upgrade items your equipment. To keep your gear up-to-date it is recommended you visit the upgrader each few weeks.

The cost of upgrades will vary based on the current item level of the item being upgraded however, they will always be cheaper than buying new equipment from other sources. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points purchasing a similar piece from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade weapons, armor, tools and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased from item upgraders NPCs for various currencies. They are also available on random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased, it can be used on any weapon or tool using an button, which will show a preview of the item level upgrade when it is upgraded when the player has enough materials.

Upgrade costs vary depending on the item slot, and the current item level. For instance, weapons will cost more than bracers, or gloves. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a number of crests, with certain upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of the Flightstones or the crests used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain level it is able to be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.

Many locations have upgraders for their items which include the main island and a few outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount as well as a chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrading increases when more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete certain achievements or quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II is no item upgrader available at the start of Icewind Dale. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are available only via a variety of ways. This is both a benefit as well as a drawback.

In Season 3, a number of new features were added to the upgrade system. Once a player has upgraded to a certain item level for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level will cost less. This is true even if those items are from a different set of equipment.

The amount of Valorstones needed for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is affixed to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is reduced too, but it is only available after certain milestones have been reached.

Crests

When upgrading equipment in WoW, players have a few options. Flightstones are a currency that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specialized and are used for specific item level upgrades. Crests are an essential part of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1 and are available in 4 ranks.

The first thing to remember is that crests are only available for equipment that is that is of a particular rank. Each rank comes with a different upgrade path. The most basic and straightforward upgrade route costs 15 crests while the most complex can require as much as 20 crests depending on the type of equipment being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through working through content that is of the appropriate level, whether that involves walking around and performing outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, dungeons or raids of all difficulties for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses to obtain endgame gear. The crests can later be exchanged at an upgrader NPC, such as Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade pathways and steps.

The use of these currencies isn't too complicated however, the system introduces some changes to the overall upgrade process. Once a piece of gear has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it is no longer required to purchase Flightstones. This change is designed to allow players to upgrade their equipment up to the highest ilvl possible for all their characters instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

It's also essential to use crests with care, since they only have one use. For instance it's a good idea to use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the top equipment you have, and then save Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you're planning to create. This is especially relevant for rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character, that will be able to take advantage of the account-wide discount if all slots are full of high-quality gear.
