Types of UPVC Door Handles

When your upvc door handle requires replacement, it is essential to find the right replacement upvc window handles for your home. Locksmiths can supply and install high-security uPVC door handles with extra security features.

The most important measurements you should take are the measurement A (also called PZ) and the length of the backplate. Check these measurements to ensure your new uPVC handle will fit.

Lever/Lever

A lever is a rigid bar pivoted around a point (known as a fulcrum). When you apply force to the end of the bar, the fulcrum is likely to turn in the direction the force is applied. This rotates the force and allows you to lift or move things that would normally require more force to lift.

The distance between the fulcrum of the lever and the point at which you apply force determines the maximum movement. This is referred to as the mechanical advantage. The advantage of mechanical force increases as the lever gets extended. You can calculate mechanical advantage by dividing distance from fulcrum point to the place where you are applying force by distance between the fulcrum's point and the end of the lever.

Levers can have a variety of effects based on how the force is applied. A lever in class 2, for example has a tendency of turning in the opposite direction once the effort force is applied. The forces produced when you push on the handle of a front door will create rotational effects similar to these.

However, levers don't create energy. Levers increase the force by making small amounts of effort applied over a lengthy distance into greater amounts of force applied over smaller distances. Levers are used to lift heavy objects and transport large amounts of cargo. The principle of the lever is also utilized in everyday tools like crowbars. Hammer claws, fishing rods and your own legs, when you stand on the hand brake of your vehicle.

Lever/Pad

Lever pad handles, also known as upvc door handles, have levers on each side to operate the multipoint locks. They are available in a variety of variations & finishes and are suitable for a variety of materials, including UPVC, Aluminium & Timber doors. They are sold in pairs for both the inner and exterior door with screws and spindles included. They are also available in hand and unhandled versions to suit different types of users.

These are often used for new constructions and are fitted to replace doors made of upvc. They are usually operated by lifting up the levers, which throw out all of the multipoint locks before turning the key to close / unlock. They provide a bit more security than traditional lever door handles because locking can only be performed through the inside with a key.

They are not as secure as a cylinder bolt, but are a cost-effective alternative for a home with more security. The only drawback is that they don't offer the same level of protection as a cylinder bolt, and consequently don't block access to outside if the door has been left open.

Typically, they are designed to work with a 92mm lock, or the replacement version of this called a Paddock lock. They will have a 92mm cylinder centre on the inside and 62mm on the outside and be fitted with 2 spindle followers. Some are fitted with the back plate while others are removable to enable different fixing centres.

Lever/Snib

Lever latches, the simplest of door handles are used. Pushing down on the lever is a simple mechanism that opens inside to keep the door shut, and can be locked using a key. Some lever privacy handles operate on the same principle however with an additional snib, which is similar to a doorknob.

A snib button is very useful, especially for homes where it's crucial to protect privacy or ensure security. You can use the snib feature to stop your partner from entering until they are prepared. This kind of handle is also popular in interior doors, such as bedrooms, where you may want to restrict access from the outside.

In certain situations there are instances where snib buttons could cause issues, especially when you have older locks or doors that are distorted. If the snib button was accidentally pressed by a person who isn't familiar with it, the door could be slammed and you locked out. It is possible to gain entry by knocking the door frame or the letterbox. However, this is not ideal.

If your uPVC door is equipped with a snib-button, we recommend replacing the handle with a contemporary E-LOK 7-Series smart lock. These locks can be retrofitted on pull handle kits that double turn and are available with cover plates that hide existing holes for a seamless install. The E-LOK application can be used to unlock doors using RFID cards or a mechanical key. Passcodes are also available for convenience and security. The system has been tested for 200,000 cycles in order to ensure durability. The handles are made from solid metal and comply with BS EN 1670 Grade 5 for corrosion resistance.

Lever/Moveable Pad

This is a popular handle design for front doors. It comes with the benefit of keeping the conservatory door handles from opening from outside without a key, if the lock is not deadlocked. This is achieved by the 'pad'-shaped external handle that locks into the gap between the handles and the lock case to prevent the latch from being removed or the door being opened.

This type of handle is made for uPVC doors fitted with multipoint locks that operate using a split spindle operation. This type of operation requires that the internal lever handle for patio door and external pad handle both be fitted to the same lock case. This can be a simple switch from the current uPVC handles, but it might also involve changing the lock case or even a new set of handles to accommodate this additional function.

These aluminium lever/movable pads door handles are suitable for use on uPVC and feature an easy-to-maintain slide bearing. They also come with fixing lugs, spring cassettes, and an unstick slide bearing. These handles have a cut-out for a euro-profile, and can be installed on a variety of upvc door locks and handles or doors made of timber.

Lever moveable pads are available in various finishes and suit many different multipoint locks. They are designed to work with split spindle multipoint locks that have a 92mm cylinder and require a specific split spindle set as supplied by the lock maker.

These Hoppe London 77G/3831N/113 lever moveable pad handles are made from cast aluminium with an anodised finish which is corrosion resistant and has high scratch resistance. They can be used in conjunction with many other Hoppe products like handles for french door handles and window handles. They are also fitted with an escutcheon for security.

Lever/Moveable Snib

The lever handle is one of the most sought-after types of upvc door handles and comes in a variety of designs. It consists of two inline handles that can be locked and moved by a thumbturn cylinder, or keys. Pad handles can be used as a substitute to lever handles. It is made up of an adjustable or fixed pad which can be used to operate locks. These Fullex handles come with a spring-loaded lever pad as well as a snib, which can be activated to hold the latch.
