The performance of many Path of Exile items can be enhanced by upgrading them. They can also provide additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Rare-grade equipment can be superior to modernized Common or Magic gear due to their high demands.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be used on weapon and armor items. They boost the performance of the item they are connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. Additionally, they can be salvaged from items with upgrade components in them using a specialist or more powerful salvage kit.

The amount of damage that an armored piece or weapon can absorb depends on the extent of its upgrades. The upgrade of an armor piece to maximum upgrade level will boost its damage absorption. But, it's important to note that this will also raise its weight, requiring it to weigh more than before.

There are a variety of armor upgrades available in the game. Each one has a distinct impact. Some upgrades give armor an extra number of health points while others make it lighter and more powerful. The name of the armor upgrade will tell you the kind of upgrade the item upgrader mod can be given, as illustrated below.

Some upgrades also feature magic or a mix of technology and magic which is shown by the "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require a charge to use, and are shown by a "Charges" entry in the table below. The charges for these upgrades are updated daily or never expire dependent on the upgrade.

Iron Ore is the cheapest way to improve your armor. You can find it by exploring and looting small treasure chests. Titanium is more costly, however, it is available in the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, like the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be used on armor pieces that are of high-level. These upgrades can provide significant improvement in stats and are worth the cost, especially for single-handed weapons.

A piece of armor upgraded to the highest upgrade level will dramatically increase its defense capabilities but the wearer must be aware that increasing its weight will dramatically reduce its agility and speed. It is not recommended to upgrade armor above +9. The boost in defense typically isn't worth the weight and power cost of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades give players the ability to improve certain aspects of their weapon. For example an upgrade could enhance the damage caused by the shells of a shotgun or the accuracy of the rifle sniper. Certain weapons come with special enhancements to enhance their intrinsic capabilities. These include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and decreases the chance of weapon overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases the velocity of projectiles for greater damage).

Most upgrades for weapons require one of three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons and a whetblade for applying. These are obtained through either doing side quests, or taking out a certain number of monsters or bosses, or by contacting the Weapon Upgrade NPC in Central Flarine.

To upgrade a weapon, equipment set piece or Whetblade, you must visit the NPC [Armor] Boboko located in Central Flarine, and pay her an upgrade fee of a certain amount of bars. The higher the upgrade level, the higher the number of bars are required to complete it. The cost of the upgrades will be lower if have more than one of the relevant upgrade materials.

In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade your weapon and equipment sets has changed a bit. In the past you could search for an Upgrade Bench and pay a set amount of Bars to upgrade your equipment or weapon to a higher quality. You could continue to do this until you reach a maximum upgrade level for the equipment or weapon, following which the upgrades would be reset.

You can still do this, however, the process is high on RNG and low on agency. You're better off buying gear with minimal upgrade levels but with high base scores and stat distributions. These will then be able to give you the most prestigious perks and blessings.

Most players will want to prioritize weapon upgrades for the weapons they are most likely to use to make sure they are able to level up quicker. Players should also upgrade the weapons their teammates use to make them stronger. For instance, Shepard should consider upgrading the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R to enhance its effectiveness when accompanied by biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels are utilized in the armor's sockets and weapons, increasing the power of a character and bringing about secondary effects. They can be made through the process of jewelry crafting, where you combine a gem and various reagents at a jewelry table. The higher the level of the gemstone is, the greater its secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses all over the world, or through collecting Legendary Gear. You can also buy them from The Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Prisms and gold.

The Jeweler can boost the quality of the gem in stages that range from Crude up to Royal. Depending on the tier of the gem, it will provide a different stat boost when slotted into weapons, equipment and jewelry.

All kinds of jewels can be made at the Jeweler, with the exception of the rare and legendary gems that require you to be at a sufficient level to qualify for these. Jewels can be replaced by another jewel without damaging the original. You can only replace the jewel once within an item upgrader of equipment.

Using more jewels in the movement can make it feel more comfortable and is usually performed to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. In addition to improving performance, the jewels also create an outer layer that is more durable than steel, so the repeated friction with pivots doesn't damage them as easily.

In addition to the above upgrades players can also obtain glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. They offer a small benefit and are able to be swapped easily but aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs are like jewelry and can be upgraded at the Jeweler to exchange Scattered Crystals and gold. Glyphs can also be taken out from the inventory, and they are returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits and aegis, cannot be swapped out, and are only recoverable by using an Upgrade Extractor, or by salvaging them using Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are a great way to give your character various small, but beneficial advantages. They can be acquired starting in the beginning areas as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, and through performing road interactions. They can be purchased from the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinket players will be able to unlock is the cloak. It gives a small, but useful bonus in movement speed and the ability to evade. After that, they can acquire rings, amulets, and necklaces in a similar way to how a player obtains armor and weapons. Every piece of equipment has an upgrade slot which can be universal or jewel. Universal upgrades are smaller and are able to be used on any piece of equipment. Jewels cannot be upgraded or replaced, and can only be used with certain trinkets.

These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active when the hero isn't in combat. This allows the hero to be more efficient while inactive. It can also compensate for the absence of strong team or talent tree slots that are normally filled by the hero's optimal stats.

A good rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you aren't planning to replace soon, followed by any items with desirable stats but less important than the iLevel of the item upgrade that is being upgraded. This is true especially if you're looking to upgrade several statistics on an item upgrader mod. It's best to upgrade just one crucial stat rather than two suboptimal ones.

Jungle players usually upgrade their yellow trinkets to a red one at the beginning of the game. Mid and top players on the other hand, will choose a pink or green ward, based on the matchup. These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's map control abilities.

Aside from the items listed above, players can discover a variety of other trinkets in the game in the form of awards and trophies. These can be obtained by completing certain milestones in the story, such as the main quest of a chapter or killing a certain boss. They can be viewed by selecting the relevant achievement in the reward tab of the hero menu.
