    How to Replace an audi tt key programming G28 Engine Speed Sensor

    In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

    Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

    The sensor local is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

    If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

    Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins, and they have different functions but the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. If you're having issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

    2. Injectors

    Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

    I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car can start if the G28 is audi tt key fob not working plugged in and runs fine when it is plugged in, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.

    I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

    3. Fuel Pump

    The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite ohms.

    4. ECU

    Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

    Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or replacement audi key cost a misfire when you are in gear.
