The iRobot Roomba 980 robot cleaner with mop Vacuum Cleaner

Robot vacuums remove pet hair, lint, and dust from the floor before they can settle. They can also avoid stairs and other obstacles such as furniture that is tippy.

Most robotic vacuums require maintenance, such as emptying (and occasionally, rinsing) the bin and wiping sensors and cameras. They also require to be plugged in. Many come with smartphone applications for scheduling, setting and more.

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the latest model in the line of top-of-the-line robotic vacuum cleaners that are a staple in any modern home. This model is equipped with a HEPA-filter to aid those suffering from allergies. On top of that, it also comes with a powerful battery that can clean for up to two hours and it will automatically return to its dock once its bin is full.

Smart mapping is a different feature that assists in identifying areas of your home that require attention and provides a cleaning path to get around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does a good robot vacuum job of maneuvering around toys abandoned on the floor, or furniture legs that are sticking out of the ground. Roomba also comes with a sensor that can snap Roomba to its real-world location if it starts to wander away from its original position.

iRobot has also added a new set of rollers under the Roomba's bottom, which don't have bristles and, therefore, tend to resist tangles better than previous models. They're also taller than previous rollers and can better fit under low couches and beds and are designed to allow this model to move more easily on varying floor types.

What sets the Roomba 980 apart from other high-end models, though, is its inclusion of a new dirt detection feature that uses cameras to detect particles of dirt embedded. This is an improvement over the previous model which relied on an algorithm that was driven by sensors to bounce around the room, and then clean the area three times, at different angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. Its score on the low pile carpet was excellent and it got a very high score on mid pile too. It did a good job of picking up pet hair, but it was struggling with very thick and long pet fur that was clumped together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the best buy robot vacuum and mop Value Robot Vacuum Mop (Ucanalytics.Com) performing robots on our list despite the minor drawbacks. It's also not as expensive as top-of-the-line models. It's got plenty of features we'd expect to find in a flagship model, but it doesn't have all the fancy app-enabled functions or smart home integration that are found in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up in a matter of minutes and is ready for use right away. After taking off the battery pull tab and yellow bin insert from the undercarriage, all you have to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, hit its large "Clean" button, and let it get to work. It will return to docking station when it is running out of battery or is full of debris. There are also indicators on top that show when the bin is empty, when it needs to recharge, or when it loses its Wi-Fi.
