There are simple steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. First, you must locate a clean work surface to perform the process. Next, carefully pry the battery from its socket by lifting it up on the side that is closest to the key-ring loop. Wear rubber gloves to protect the electronic contact surfaces.

Place the new battery into the socket after the old one was removed. Make sure that the positive side is facing upwards and that it is securely seated in all the clips. Slide the cover towards the key-ring until it becomes loose, and falls off. Then, remove the cover to reveal the hidden mechanical key blade. It can be used to unlock your vehicle through the driver's door if the key fob battery is dead or missing.

How to Start Your Vehicle

The majority of modern vehicles come with key fobs that can perform much more than just unlock or lock the doors. They also have other useful functions like summoning and auto parking the vehicle. Replace the battery, then snap to the fob.

Note: Some older volvo key fob shell models use a different type of battery which is the CR2025. CR2025 batteries are 7 tenths of a millimeter thinner than a CR2032 battery, and you must be extra careful when placing the battery of the replacement.

The key fob you have in your possession has the transponder chip programmed to your Volvo. When you insert the key fob into the ignition barrel, the transponder chip reads the code and compares it with the one that is stored in the start inhibitor module of your vehicle. If the codes aren't compatible and your car doesn't start, it won't. This is an important security measure to stop your Volvo from beginning if the wrong key is used.
